Saffron Tea vs Saffron Supplement

A cup of saffron tea is a lovely ritual, but is it a substitute for a saffron supplement? Here's how the two compare on potency, cost and consistency, plus how to brew saffron tea properly and spot fake threads.

The verdict

  • For a research-matched dose (e.g. 30 mg/day for mood), a standardized supplement is more reliable.
  • Saffron tea is a pleasant, caffeine-free way to enjoy saffron, but its active-compound content is unknown and varies.
  • Cost: an extract capsule is usually cheaper per research dose than high-grade threads.
  • Many people use both: a supplement for consistency, tea as an evening ritual.

How Much Saffron Is in a Cup of Saffron Tea?

One saffron thread weighs roughly 2 mg, so a typical cup made with 10–20 threads contains about 20–40 mg of saffron spice. That sounds similar to the 30 mg used in mood trials, but there are two catches:

  • Spice isn't extract. Trials used concentrated, standardized extracts. The crocin and safranal content of threads depends on grade, origin, age and storage, and can vary several-fold.
  • Not everything ends up in your cup. Crocins dissolve well in hot water, but how much you extract depends on steeping time and temperature, and safranal is volatile.

What Did the Research Actually Use?

The mood, sleep, PMS and eye trials summarized in our benefits guide used capsules or tablets of saffron extract at defined doses, mostly 20–30 mg/day. We aren't aware of any quality trial of saffron tea for these outcomes. So if you want to replicate a study, a supplement is the closer match.

How to Brew Saffron Tea

  1. Measure 10–20 threads (a generous pinch) per cup.
  2. Crush lightly between your fingers, or grind with a pinch of sugar, to release more color.
  3. Bloom the threads in 2–3 tablespoons of hot (not boiling, about 80°C / 175°F) water for 10–20 minutes.
  4. Top up with hot water or a mild green or herbal tea. Add honey, cardamom or a slice of lemon if you like.
  5. Drink the threads too, or re-steep them once.

How to Spot Fake Saffron Threads

Real: deep red threads with a slightly flared, trumpet-shaped tip; a honey-and-hay aroma; slow golden-yellow color release in water (the thread stays red).
Fake or cut: threads that are uniform, stringy or all one width; lots of yellow or white "style" pieces; instant red dye in water; a price far below other sellers; powdered "saffron" of unknown origin.

Buy from sellers that name the origin (Iran, Spain, Kashmir, Greece) and the grade (ISO 3632 Category I). The same adulteration problem is why we recommend branded or standardized extracts for supplements. See our buying checklist.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Want results like the studies? Choose a standardized supplement at the research dose for your goal (use the dosage calculator).
  • Want a calming evening ritual? Saffron tea is a lovely choice, and you can enjoy it alongside a supplement.
  • On medication or pregnant? Culinary amounts in tea are generally considered fine; check with your doctor before concentrated supplements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is saffron tea as effective as saffron supplements?

Probably not for clinical goals. Supplements deliver a standardized, research-matched dose, while the strength of tea varies with the threads and brewing. Tea hasn't been tested in quality trials.

Can I drink saffron tea every day?

Yes. A cup made with 10–20 threads is a culinary amount and is considered safe for most people. Pregnant women should stick to food amounts.

When is the best time to drink saffron tea?

Many people enjoy it in the evening as a caffeine-free wind-down drink.

Does saffron tea help you sleep?

It may help you relax as part of a bedtime routine, but the sleep trials used a standardized extract (affron®), not tea.
